Story
Steel Craft House is an architect-led transformation of a former early-20th-century car garage in Wittevrouwen. Over a ten-year self-build (completed around 2020), it was turned into a timber home with a weathering-steel (corten) front façade, designed by Zecc Architecten. The new frontage abstracts familiar motifs from the surrounding workers’ houses—plinth, string courses, flat arch and cornice—and reinterprets them in sheet steel, making the house both contemporary and true to the street. Did you know the owners—one of them a steel fabricator—built most of it themselves, with virtually every steel plate and oak slat passing through their hands multiple times?
